David Frenkel

David Frenkel has worked as a photojournalist and a reporter in independent Russian media since 2011 focusing on grassroots protests and public politics. He joined Mediazona in 2016 to cover police violence and the Russian judicial system, reporting and shooting from political trials.

Since 2019 Frenkel has led Mediazona’s data team which utilizes publicly available data to release investigations and visualizations, in covering stories such as how Russian government faked COVID statistics. The Mediazona team won the European Press Prize in 2021 for investigation of how protesters were beaten by Belarusian police in Minsk.

Since the the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Frenkel and many of the Mediazona staff have had to leave Russia. However, the media outlet continues the work covering Russian war crimes, such as the investigation into looting by Russian soldiers using post tracking data. One of the Mediazona data team’s current projects is counting and estimating the actual number of dead Russian soldiers. The estimation is constantly used by journalists and experts around the world.
