Mediazona: Critical journalism about Putin's Russia

How many Russian soldiers have actually been killed since the invasion of Ukraine? That's what Russian journalist David Frenkel and his colleagues at Mediazona are trying to find out.

With the help of brave volunteers in Russia, local media and social platforms, they have now compiled over 90,000 names into a list, created in collaboration with BBC News Russian.

Founded by members of Pussy Riot in 2014, Mediazona has been reporting on the regime's tightening grip on the Russian public, with a particular focus on political criminal cases. When they wanted to expose war crimes in the war against Ukraine, they had to leave their home country.

From exile, they continue to uncover the brutal consequences of the war, and Frenkel, as the head of Mediazona's data journalism team, plays a crucial role in this work.

In conversation with TV 2's foreign affairs reporter Øystein Bogen, Frenkel will share insights into their demanding journalistic work, their most important projects, the challenges around security, and how they reach their audience in an increasingly authoritarian Russia.
