The Aarebrot Conversation 2025: The West Against the West

A new wave of geopolitical unrest is sweeping the world. The foundations of the transatlantic alliance are beginning to show signs of strain. The war in Ukraine continues, and the United States appears increasingly unpredictable - at times, almost unrecognizable.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to annex Greenland. His act of raising tariffs has caused significant challenges for the global economy, and the U.S. now shows an almost hostile attitude toward Europe and the EU. What happens when one ally suddenly threatens another? What is the future of the relationship between Europe and the United States?

And what about Trump’s ties to Putin and Russia and, just as importantly, Putin’s ties to Trump? How strong is European unity, and will it hold? And how vulnerable is the Nordic region in all of this?

To help us understand what may be the emergence of a new world order, we have assembled a highly competent panel. This year’s Aarebrot Conversation features: Miles Taylor, former Chief of Staff at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security during Donald Trump’s first presidential term, Martin Krasnik, Editor-in-Chief of the Danish newspaper «Weekendavisen» and Katarzyna Zysk, Professor at the Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies.
